  • Lagarrette Blount did wrong, but take it easy on the kid

I don't condone what Oregon running back Lagarrette Blount did at the end of last night's game at Boise State. A punch, sucker or otherwise, is wrong in any context of football.

But reading some comments on sports websites shows how much so many people have lost perspective. There have been calls for criminal charges and for Blount to be kicked out of school. I have always been annoyed by sanctimonious sportswriters who wouldn't know a fly route from a flyswatter and sanctimonious fans of the same breed are no less unbearable. Lagarrette Blount is a kid and he did what kids do: he used poor judgment and screwed up. We have a saying, "kid gloves", for a reason. Because we know that young people make mistakes and we also know that their periodic poor judgment shouldn't ruin their lives. Oregon Coach Chip Kelly did exactly the right thing today. Suspending Blount allows him to stay with the team and keep his scholarship. Kelly has kept the doors open for a teaching moment, and as a coach he has an opportunity to prove he has the one skill that matters most for coaching success, that is the ability to teach. Good for Chip Kelly for not giving up on a young man when so many know-nothings seem so willing to toss him aside.

  • In a world of instant messaging, what are some rules to email etiquette?

This question doesn't make any sense. It also sounds like the voiceover from a summer blockbuster movie. Why ask about email etiquette when the predicate underpinning of the question refers to instant messaging? Wait, am I supposed to answer the question, or pick apart poor sentence structure and grammatical flaws? I'm new.

I just answered this Featured Question; you can answer it too!

  • Greetings and Salutations

Hi everyone! I'm just getting started on Xanga... Drop me a comment if you've got some ideas on what to do first - or just to say, "Hi!"

So, going beyond the canned introduction, allow me to introduce myself to anyone who happens by this particular blog post. I'm Rob. Husband of Nichole for 15 years. Father to McKenzie for 14. I work in finance for a little company that makes airplanes in Seattle, a job I have held for going on seven years now. It's not exciting work, but it is interesting and pays the bills. What makes me happiest about it is that it allows Nichole to be a stay-at-home mom to McKenzie, something I sincerely believe even a teenager--a young teenager in Kenzie's case--can benefit from.

I am a fanatic for Texas Longhorn football. I mean, just look at me in my profile photo. Crazy! The UT is my alma mater and I am a proud native of the Lone Star State. Beyond this simple introduction, you can get to know me as I post about...whatever. My understanding is that Xanga is a community, unlike other blog sites where even good blogs go unread and feedback is rare. I already noticed that today's "top blog" has 136 comments! Wow! I hope to, one day, get a comment from someone besides the Xanga team. We'll see how that goes.

About Me

  • My wife, Nichole, our daughter, McKenzie, and I live in Washington State. I am neither a professional blogger nor do I have anything particularly interesting to say. At least I don't think I do. If you need to know the basics, i.e., how to/not to offend me, here they are: I am a Methodist. I lean politically conservative, though I do not identify with either party and I actually voted for President Obama. No I do not regret the decision. I served in the Army after college, though I never saw conflict. I am not fanatical about anything except Longhorn football. Insult my religion, intelligence, politics, whatever, go ahead. Insult my wife, my child, my momma, or the Longhorns and we'll tangle.
